This is a seldom found 1894 Phonendoscope Stethoscope made by Arnold & Sons of London. It is in near new condition with exception front black piece is damaged and slender tiny bell piece can not be screwed in. Bell is made of Brass with Nickel plating with tiny extension amplifier. The bell was a new design that used reverberation amplification to stethoscopes. This treasure is pictured and described in Keith Wilbur’s book “Antique Medical Instruments” as “In the last quarter of the 1800s, many clever stethoscopes were conceived while others were….”. They made their debut under such high sounding names as Hydrophones, Phonophores, Phonendoscopes, Stethonoscopes and Ampliphones…….”. This was patented on Oct 2, 1894 by Bazzi – Bianchi Bowles and made by a variety of makers. Arnold & Sons are premier medical makers of the 1800s. This will highlight any collection of antique stethoscopes.
