This treasure is called a True Fit Optical Optometer for Optometry and was used to test eyesight in middle to late 1800s. It is made boxwood with glass focus lens with movable sight to prescribe glasses. These were prevalent at the 1800s General Store for self-eye exams and then selecting or ordering glasses. History also preserves this eye scope could be ordered via mail, used at home to test eyes and corrective glasses ordered. The Bennion book shows a later model of 1870 with boxwood extension & brass view lenses. Later models from 1875 models were manufactured with all brass. This eye tester is still in working order. The markings are clear with large to small letters to read and increments on required focus lenses. It measures 9" long and is 2.5” tall at handle. When looking through the eyepiece you slide one part till focus is clear telling the lens needed. It is made of boxwood in very good shape.
