These are a set of the first eye contact lenses made in the 1940s in original case and removal suction tube.  These were designed to cover entire eye (called Sclera area of eye or white portion).  The center tube was a suction tube to remove each lens.  They are 1” around and were made of a new 1940s Plastic like substance called PMMA (Poly methyl methacrylate).  Leather covered box is in good condition with Blue velvet lining.  Contacts are in excellent condition and displays very well.  One is marked “R” and the other “L”.  We were told the fitting process could be painful as a mold of eye was first made and then these prescription contacts made.  These 1940s contacts are the size of a quarter and now 65+ year’s later new contacts are smaller than a dime.  Our research found that the Bennion Antique Book mentions “As early as 1845 Sir John Herschel suggested the idea of contact lenses, but it was not until the end of the century that it was considered”.  Contact lenses became a business market prevalent in the 1940s.  The Case measures 3.” x 1.50” x 1”.  These will make a great addition for collectors of old eye products from over 60+ years ago.
