1870 Cammann Stethoscope Antique

Price $

This is a rare Cammann Style Stethoscope with spring adjustment design and a Ford’s style Bell.  It has been professionally framed (Michaels).  White Ear pieces appear to be replacments for doctor’s comfort.  History preserves the Cammann Stethoscope was the Holy Grail of professional doctors with assorted new enhancements.  In the 1880s many improvements focused on the tension adjustment.  This is an early model using a spring for tension as later the Knight Screw tension adjustment was one of the next enhancements.  This 1870 Stethoscope uses a spring tension pull as some others had a hand stitched stretch webbing or elastic band to provide tension.  The Keith Wilbur’s book “Antique Medical Instruments” shows several variations of webbing tension stethoscopes.  This old stethoscope is in excellent condition with some braiding of silk extensions.  Metal parts are Brass with silver plating.  Tubing is woven cloth or silk and a Bell appears to be Bakelite or gutta-percha.  There are no visible manufacturing markings as Codman & Shurtleff prevalently made later models.  Size is 15” in length.  Frame size is 21” x 10” x 2”.  These rare treasures often sell at eBay for $ 2,000 to $ 4,000.   This will highlight any museum display or professional collectors of antique medical instruments from 130+ years ago.
